Cancellation Policy: Refunds, credits for future classes and orientations, or transferring a ticket to a future date, will only be provided if we are notified by email to education@ccwcoop.ca at least 24 hours in advance of the class. For cancellation less than 24 hours before the class, we do not provide a refund, but we do offer a 50% credit towards a future class or orientation. No refunds or credits will be provided for no shows. If transferring a ticket to a future class date, students may only transfer their ticket once before forfeiting their original ticket, even if providing more than 24 hours notice

Learn how to accurately mark and scribe cut lines on your project parts and elevate your woodworking to the next level. Join Gerry Humeny for this 3 hour introductory course and learn ‘old school’ tips and tricks to mark your parts for increased accuracy and closer fitting joints. By the end of the day you will have mastered tools like gauges, squares, and compasses – and combined with simple geometry this foundational skill will significantly improve your project workflow and elevate your woodworking projects.

Hand Tools 103 – The Bench Plane
Age 16+
The participant will be shown how to tune up a #4 Bench Plane and proper planing technique. Whether it be a vintage plane that you restore or an inexpensive new plane recently purchased, these tips and tricks will help you get the most out of the tool. If you have an older bench plane or a new inexpensive plane you are encouraged to bring it with you. You will learn the parts and pieces of the plane, checking for flatness of the sole, sharpening and set-up. With proper sharpening and set-up, you will be producing a “smooth as glass” finish.

Wood Shaping 102 – Introduction to wood carving, Carve an Egg.
The participant will learn about different species of wood and its properties. The purpose of this course is to experience working with wood with one’s hands. The participants will learn safe carving knife use. The participant will learn safe carving techniques by carving a wooden egg. The egg shape is an excellent project for the participant to gain understanding of working with all the wood grain directions.

Wood Shaping 101 – Make your own Carving Knife
Ages 10+
Experience hands-on woodworking and create your own carving knife. Join Lyndon Crossman for this fun immersive experience and learn basic woodworking skills using rasps, hand saws, chisels, mallets and more. By the end of the course you will have learned basic woodworking and -shaping skills, gained valuable knowledge about different wood species and best of all you will have created your own carving knife using your own hands and skill. This course is a great foundational starting point for your woodworking journey by touching on all the basics in a fun, hands-on approach.

Home Maintenance 101- Basic Tools and Fasteners What to have and How to use them

The participant will learn about Hand Tools, Starting at the Basics. You will have fun learning about common and not so common hand tools, understanding their purposes and how to use them. Practical applications and demonstrations for some of the tools will be covered. You will also learn about different fasteners including screw, bolts and lags.

Home Maintenance 102- Hang ups ,Drills and a Hole lot More
You will learn the basics of power drills, drill bits, brad guns and impact guns, what they do , the different features available and matching the proper tool for the job. We will discuss what to buy to best suit your needs, different battery options and tips on safe operation. How to attach and hang things to your walls using different types of hardware will be covered.

Laser Cutter 101 – Operator BasicsThe participant will learn about safely operating a laser cutter. This class is for beginners and focuses on the 100 watt CO2 laser cutter at Cowichan Community Workshop Co-op, and the RDWorks laser control software. Anyone wishing to use the laser cutter at CCWC is required to complete this class before being allowed to operate the laser cutter during regular workshop hours. Ages all Ages |
Stationary tools – Wood Lathe 101 – Introduction to Wood Bowl TurningThe participant will learn how to use a woodworking lathe to create a wooden bowl. The course begins with a lecture where the participant will learn parts of the woodworking lathe, lathe safety, safe wood blank mounting techniques, and learn about wood turning tools. The remainder of the course will consist of hands-on instruction that will allow the participant to create their very own wooden bowl step by step. Stationary tools – CNC Router 101 – Introduction to CNC EquipmentThe participant will learn about the general use and setting up of a cnc machine for the hobbyist. Subjects will include type of software used during this course, types of cnc machinery. We will touch upon drawing files or finding files to cut. We will talk a bit about something called G code.
