Hand Tools 102 – Layout Tools

Age: 16+

The participant will learn about using layout tools used in accurately marking and scribing cut lines on project parts. Use of the marking gauge, square, marking knife,  scriber, awl, compass, dividers etc. Introduction to some “Old School tricks and tips” to help simplify accurately marking layout lines on components. Using simple geometry will help in minimizing measuring and increasing accuracy to ensure close fitting parts on the first try.

Hand Tools 103 – The Bench Plane

Age 16+

The participant will be shown how to tune up a #4 Bench Plane and proper planing technique. Whether it be a vintage plane that you restore or an inexpensive new plane recently purchased, these tips and tricks will help you get the most out of the tool.  If you have an older bench plane or a new inexpensive plane you are encouraged to bring it with you.  You will learn the parts and pieces of the plane, checking for flatness of the sole, sharpening and set-up. With proper sharpening and set-up, you will be producing a “smooth as glass” finish.

Wood Shaping 101 – Make your own Carving Knife

Ages 10+

The participant will learn about different species of wood and their properties. The purpose of this course is to experience working with wood with one’s hands.  The participants will make their own carving knife by using wood and metal shaping tools.  Once completed the knife can then be used to continue learning wood carving techniques and developing one’s hand carving skills.

Wood Shaping 102 – Introduction to wood carving, Carve an Egg.

Ages 10+

The participant will learn about different species of wood and its properties. The purpose of this course is to experience working with wood with one’s hands.  The participants will learn safe carving knife use. The participant will learn safe carving techniques by carving a wooden egg.

Ages 10+

The participant will learn about different species of wood and its properties. The purpose of this course is to experience working with wood with one’s hands.  The participants will learn safe carving practices. The participant will learn safe carving techniques by carving a wooden spoon using various wood shaping tools.

Home Maintenance 101- Basic Tools and Fasteners What to have and How to use them

Ages: 12+

The participant will learn about Hand Tools, Starting at the Basics. You will have fun learning about common and not so common hand tools, understanding their purposes and how to use them. Practical applications and demonstrations for some of the tools will be covered. You will also learn about different fasteners including screw, bolts and lags.

Home Maintenance 102- Hang ups ,Drills and a Hole lot More

 You will learn the basics of power drills, drill bits, brad guns and impact guns, what they do , the different features available and matching the proper tool for the job. We will discuss what to buy to best suit your needs, different battery options and tips on safe operation. How to attach and hang things to your walls using different types of hardware will be covered.

Home Maintenance  103- Power Tools That chop and Dice

Table saws, circular saws, reciprocating saws, vibrating undercut saws and laminate cutters? Different blades, tricks of the trades and safety tips will be discussed. Learn what tools to use for baseboards, framing, flooring, removing grout and cutting in tight places.

Home Maintenance Small Repairs for Drywall-Playing in the Mud

Hands-on instruction for patching drywall from gouges to holes. The fun part is making the holes for the demonstrations! Prepare to get dusty and muddy!

Laser Cutter 101 – Operator Basics

The participant will learn about safely operating a laser cutter. This class is for beginners and focuses on the 100 watt CO2 laser cutter at Cowichan Community Workshop Co-op, and the RDWorks laser control software. Anyone wishing to use the laser cutter at CCWC is required to complete this class before being allowed to operate the laser cutter during regular workshop hours.

Stationary tools – Wood Lathe – Introduction to Wood Bowl Turning

The participant will learn how to use a woodworking lathe to create a wooden bowl. The course starts with two 1 hour lectures where the participant will learn parts of the woodworking lathe, lathe safety, safe wood blank mounting techniques, and learn about wood turning tools.  The remainder of the course will consist of hands-on instruction that will allow the participant to create their very own wooden bowl step by step. Each participant will have their own wood lathe to have an immersive learning experience.

Stationary tools – CNC Router – Introduction to CNC Equipment

I would like to keep the age groups roughly the same if possible. The participant will learn about the general use and setting up of a cnc machine for the hobbyist.  Subjects will include  type of software used during this course, types of cnc machinery.  We will touch upon drawing files or finding files to cut.  We will talk  a bit about something called G code.  We will talk about setting up your machine to do a cut and also.  Different ways to anchor your work to the spoil board (table)

For cancellation less than 24 hours before the class, we do not provide a refund, but we do offer a 50% credit towards a future class or orientation. No refunds or credits will be provided for no shows. If transferring a ticket to a future class date, students may only transfer their ticket once before forfeiting their original ticket, even if providing more than 24 hours notice
